StemCord can be much cheaper than Cordlife in term of costs, but what is notable is that the methods of storage in the 2 companies are different: StemCord stores using multiple cryovials while Cordlife uses just 1 cryobag.
Some notes: Cordlife is accreditated by AABB (American Association of Blood Banking) while StemCord is not; Cordlife has branches in other countries and is publicly listed I think while StemCord is Singaporean-owned.
Donation to the Singapore Cord Blood Bank is at no cost to ourselves, including the drawing of blood for testing, the tests and questionnaire that it goes through with the blood and the parents are very much more thorough than the private banks as the public bank needs to maintain very high blood quality in order to provide for public cordblood transplants ( not to say that the private banks have lower standards, but the private banks' purposes are mainly to store for private use hence if you go through their questionnaire or check out the list of tests they carry out,you will realise that they are not as lengthy).
No matter where you wish to bank your bb's cord blood with, the first and foremost thing to note is that your gynaes will need to ensure your and your bb's safety, only when these are ensured will they do the collection.
It may be good to go through your own and your hubby's family medical history to make a more informed decision, if there are family members who have had blood disorders or blood cancers etc, it may make sense to store privately as a form of insurance. The thing is Nobody can tell you the odds of you ever having to use the cord blood to save your family loved ones. What I had experienced with sales people from the private banks was that they would tell you storing privately is just like buying insurance. If you do choose to store privately, it will be good to buy accompanying cord blood insurance to insure for possible transplant costs.
What is very true is the huge potential of stem cells which may cure even the common Diabetes etc in future, what is even better are embryonic cells which raises lots of ethical controversies. Just few weeks back,it was reported in the Sg chinese news that it is possible to extract stem cells from milk teeth as well though there is still the question of quality and quality.
Me n hubby decided after a long time to donate to the public bank and use the money to make sure our coming bb is insured under MediShield asap ( cos dear Mr Khaw has not yet announced the date for auto-inclusion of bbs under Medishield), then upgrade him to enhanced MediShield with accompanying rider insurance to make sure even the co-payments are taken care of,plus to buy saving plans that comes with insurance coverage. We figure comprehensive coverage is more economical for us than spend thousands banking the cord blood privately.
The public bank will be doing DNA profiling on the blood collected from the mummies as well and inform us asap if tests on mummy's or bb's cord blood show up anything. And like what is mentioned by others, though the cord blood is donated, we can write in to request if the need arises in future, and if it has not been used, we can use it. Just like any other member of the public, we can go through the public system. The recent 2 yr old boy's case involved hospital subsidies, international cord banks searches, private insurance, medishield, medisave etc, though the bills originally came up to $30 0000, it went down to ard $4-50000 I think.
It's good to consider and talk it over with your spouse early, and check out each bank as not to overwhelm and tire yourselves.
